Jerry Blair is executive producer of documentaries at KVIE Channel 6 in Sacramento, CA. Before joining KVIE, he produced documentaries as well as educational, news and marketing programs for Blair Video Productions and was an executive producer for KRON-TV-NBC in San Francisco, respectively. In 1999, he won the Telly Award for Special Programming for his work on "California Heartland," televised state-wide on PBS outlets in California. Blair studied communications and journalism at Taft College in Taft, CA.
Joseph Brown has been an editorial writer/columnist for The Tampa (FL) Tribune for the past seven years. Before writing for the Tribune, he was an editorial page editor for the Iowa City Press-Citizen and wrote regular columns for the Des Moines (IA) Register. Brown attended the University of Iowa.
Cheryl Devall is features editor for Marketplace Radio in Los Angeles, CA. Prior to her current position, she was the Los Angeles correspondent for the San Jose (CA) Mercury-News and Miami and Chicago correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR), respectively. While at NPR, she was part of a team awarded the Alfred I. DuPont Silver Baton, the National Association of Black Journalists Award and Ohio State Award for "AIDS in Black America: Breaking the Silence." Devall attended Stanford University on a John S. and James L. Knight Fellowship in Journalism from 1995-1996. She has a Bachelor's degree in sociology from Radcliffe College of Harvard University and a Master's degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
Mike Dreaden is the managing editor of WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in Atlanta, GA, where he oversees more than 100 news people in the nation's ninth largest market. Dreaden has been a broadcast journalist for more than 25 years, and has worked in markets in Miami, Boston, New Orleans, and New York. He has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Florida.
Robert Duffy joined the staff of the St. Louis (MO) Post-Dispatch in 1973 and has since been both a writer and an editor. He currently is the paper's architecture and urban design critic. He also is an adjunct faculty member, teaching journalism at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, where he also received his Bachelor's degree in English literature.
Cyndee Fontana has been a reporter for The Fresno (CA) Bee for the past 13 years and currently covers growth and development. Last year she won first place in business writing form the Associated Press News Executives Council for a 1999 project titled "King of Kings," which explored the environmental effects of the dairy industry and massive plans by agribusiness giant J.G. Boswell. Fontana has a Bachelor's degree in journalism from San Jose State University.
Robert Gavin is a regional economics reporter for the Wall Street Journal. He covers economic and regulatory trends at state, local and regional levels for the paper's national edition. Prior to his current position he was assigned to the government and politics beat for the Journal's Northwest edition and was State House reporter for the Seattle (WA) Post-Intelligencer. Gavin has a Bachelor's degree in history from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME and a Master's in journalism from Boston University.
Evan Halper is a growth and development reporter for the Los Angeles Times, Orange County Edition. Before joining the Los Angeles Times, he was a reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer and Newsweek, respectively. In 1998 he won the James A. Wechsler Memorial Award for investigative city reporting as well as the DiCagno Prize for investigative reporting on environmental protection. Halper has a Bachelor's degree in Rhetoric from Bates College and a Master's in journalism from Columbia University.
John Higgins covers suburban development, growth, transportation and culture for the Akron (AK) Beacon Journal. In 2000, he received the Society of Professional Journalists' James M. Sutherland Award. Higgins has Bachelor's degrees in journalism and English and a Master's of Fine Arts in Nonfiction from the University of Oregon.
Tracy Kaplan covers growth, land-use and planning for the San Jose (CA) Mercury-News. She also has been a general assignment reporter for the St. Paul (MN) Pioneer Press, covered poverty for the Kansas City (MO) Star, and reported for the Los Angeles Times. Kaplan has a Bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz and has completed graduate work for her Master's in journalism at San Jose State University.
Victoria Manley is the lead reporter on housing, real estate, and land-use planning on the Monterey Peninsula for The (Monterey County, CA) Herald. She also is the certified diversity trainer for The Herald. She has a Bachelor's degree in print journalism and humanities/Italian from the University of Southern California.
Suzanne Marta covers growth, development, business and tourism in Irving, TX , as a business reporter for The Dallas Morning News. Prior to joining The Dallas Morning News she spent five years as a business reporter for The (Salem, OR) Statesman Journal. Marta is a member of the Asian American Journalists Association and has a Bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Oregon.
Diane Mastrull is a staff writer for the Philadelphia (PA) Inquirer, covering land-development issues in Pennsylvania's suburbs. Her assignment entails telling stories about how the changes in the law will impact the future of development in Pennsylvania. Luis Monteagudo, Jr. is a reporter for the San Diego (CA) Union-Tribune where he covers county government and the elected Board of Supervisors. Prior to joining the Union-Tribune, he was a reporter for the Long Beach (CA) Press-Telegram and The (San Bernardino, CA) Sun, respectively. Monteagudo is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and was past president and board member of the California Chicano News Media Association. He has a Bachelor's degree in English from Queens College in Flushing, NY.
Gordon Oliver has been a reporter for The (Portland) Oregonian for nearly 20 years. He currently covers the urban affairs beat, focusing on development and planning issues in downtown Portland and surrounding districts, the Housing Authority of Portland and the Portland Development Commission - the city's urban renewal agency. Oliver has a Bachelor's degree in sociology from Portland State University.
Lee Romney covers community and economic development for the business section of the Los Angeles Times, a beat she created last spring. The beat intertwines coverage on entrepreneurship, job creation and training, real estate development and affordable housing in the context of government policy and broader economic trends. Diane Urbani is a reporter for the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, UT, where she covers the capital city's government, preparations for the 2002 Olympics, local culture, religion, and human services. Prior to joining the Deseret News, she was co-producer of Inside Oakland 2000 on KALX-FM in Berkeley, CA. In her journalism career, she also has been a correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle, Oakland Tribune and Berkeley Daily Planet. Urbani has a Bachelor's degree in Communications from California State University, Chico and a Master's in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

Wasserman joined the AP this year after spending thirteen years at The Fresno (CA) Bee where he won best reporting for Best of the Bee, 2000. He also was a Statehouse reporter for The Anchorage (AL) Times and city editor for The Palm Springs (CA) Desert Sun. Wasserman has a Bachelor's degree in journalism from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH.

Weissenstein won third place for Best Feature Story from the Nevada Press Association in their Better Newspaper Contest in 2000. He has a Bachelor's degree from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn.
