"Covering Immigration" was designed for journalists with at least five years' experience, who cover beats with an emphasis on demographics, immigration, social services, education and business or labor issues. Fellows spent the first day of the seminar participating in the 14th Annual USC Population Laboratory Demographics Workshop: "First Results from Census 2000: State, Regional and Local." The following four days, experts presented material on immigration and the historic perspectives; new immigrants and what the Census 2000 tells us and doesn't tell us; immigration policy and regulation in terms of current law, enforcement practices and reform issues; adaptation and assimilation; immigrants and the labor force; new immigrants and education; and immigrants' impact on social services. This seminar also incorporated an afternoon field trip into the community that included a working lunch in Chinatown with staff from City News Service, Chinese Daily News, Korea Times and the Liberty Hill Foundation. After lunch, the tour continued in the community with visits to the Chinese Daily News, Central American Resource Center, Pueblo Nuevo Enterprises and the Garment Worker Center.
